{jcomments on}A recently released report by UNAIDS (2008 Report on the global AIDS epidemic) highlights encouraging news in the battle against HIV/AIDS -- the rate of global infections is slowing sharply. The number of newly infected with HIV grew by 2.7 million in 2008, bringing the world total to 33.4 million.
Compared to figures from 2001, the rate of new infections is:
- down by 15 per cent in sub-Saharan Africa
- down by 25 per cent in East Asia
- down by 10 per cent in south and southeast Asia
While the disease has killed 25 million people worldwide, the report says the availability of life-saving HIV drugs is helping more people live longer.
